Sluyter's main project while in Switzerland is to advance work on his contributions to the LandCover6k working group, especially the empirical map of land use in Middle America, and related research on the historical use of rangeland burning in the Neotropics.

While in Europe, he will also collaborate with the Anthropogenic Land Cover Change modelers involved in LandCover6k - Jed Kaplan at l'Université de Lausanne and Kees Klein Goldewijk at Universiteit Utrecht - as well as our other current guest scientist, Erle Ellis.

For those in Switzerland, Sluyter will give a seminar on land use reconstruction and landscape transformations at the Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern, on 2 November (starting 10:00 in Seminar Room 80).

His other roles include Executive Director of the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Historical Geography.
